How to stop glasses from fogging up: a guide for the post-COVID classroom

This third part of our COVID-vision problems series deals with a question as old as time itself, that has reared its ugly head once again with the recent increased prevalence of face-masks: just how do I stop my glasses from fogging up?

Although fog is a staple of British weather, it doesn’t need to be part of your classroom. Anyone who has watched their share of horror movies knows what kind of terrors can lurk in the mist.

And regular readers of our content will already know the damage that impairing vision can bring. 

So don’t make it any harder on yourself. If you have any bespectacled students, or maybe you’re a fellow glasses-wearer yourself, have a read of some of our helpful tips and tricks below to avoid the feared fogging of glasses. 

    1. Use a visor if you are eligible
    2. Adjust your glasses
    3. Make sure the mask fits properly
    4. Tuck or tape your mask
    5. Wash lenses with soapy water
    6. Use anti-fogging spray
    7. Consider contacts?

1. Use a visor if eligible

Plastic visors offer a lot more space for air to escape, which can help reduce the amount of steam you suffer. 

Please note that visors are only available if you (or the student in question) are medically exempt from wearing a standard mask.

Furthermore, these visors do not offer the same level of protection against coronavirus, so please exercise caution when considering switching your type of face covering.

2. Adjust your glasses

If you have adjustable nose-pads on your specs, maybe consider tweaking them so your specs sit a little further from your face. The extra room can help prevent the air you breathe out from getting caught on the cold lenses, meaning less fog for you. 

3. Make sure it fits properly

One of the best ways to avoid glasses fogging up is to check the fit of your mask. It should be snug against your face, with no gaps between the fabric and your cheekbones if possible.

If you have a mask with a nose-clip (usually a thin piece of metal that runs through the top of the mask), make sure you use it! By reducing gaps at the top of the mask, you force the air through the mask, or out the bottom/sides rather than up towards your glasses!

4. Tuck or tape it!

Sellotape can fix just about anything, and foggy glasses are no exception. With a little bit of tape (double-sided works well, but you can just use regular stuff too!) stick the top edge of your mask against your face.

Again, the aim here is to reduce or remove any gaps at the top edge of your mask. Alternatively, you can try to tuck your mask in underneath your glasses. 

5. Wash your specs with soapy water

This great tip comes from a study published by The Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. It states that there is a 3 step process to stopping misty eyes.

Simply wash the lenses of your glasses with a small amount of soapy water, ensuring to shake off the excess. Then, let them dry – either naturally, or using a microfibre cloth or soft tissue. And, voila, no more mist! 

6. Use an anti-fogging spray

Although slightly costlier than the previous option, if soapy water isn’t doing the trick, consider buying a specialist anti-fogging spray. Offered by many opticians and eye-care companies, these sprays work in a similar way to the soapy water method, coating the lenses with a substance that reduces the water’s ability to form droplets. 

7. No dice? Maybe try contacts!

If none of the above options are available to you – or if you’ve tried them all, and can’t find one that works for you – your best choice might be to switch to contacts.
